Responsibilities

The RAF Coding Specialist RN is primarily responsible for implementing the FastPace risk adjustment strategy across our providers, payors and vendors. These duties include annual chart abstractions to payors to support coding audits and reviews. Regularly evaluating physician ambulatory records to validate accuracy and appropriateness of HCC coding practices. Developing and implementing physician-based training programs for risk adjustment. Oversee and audit vendors performance, provide regular reporting on auditing function and vendor performance as assigned.

  • Responsible for learning the aspects of compliance in the company by completing all mandatory compliance training.
  • Reviews patient medical records and abstracts medical data that identifies all diagnoses and procedures.
  • Codes diagnoses, procedures, and appropriate modifiers from the medical record documentation using ICD-10-CM, CPT4/HCPCS classification systems.
  • Refers to a computerized encoding system, written coding aids and other reference materials to ensure accurate coding for billing.
  • Abstracts for payors and other vendors patient charts and claims for risk adjustment review and auditing.
  • Work in conjunction with supervisor with payors to review risk adjustment trends and opportunities, develops and implements strategies based on trends.
  • Perform random chart audits; evaluates physicians’/clinicians’ documentation and coding skill level and educates them when appropriate in order to improve knowledge and application.
  • Performs targeted chart reviews in ambulatory physician offices to evaluate any trends seen and identifies areas for improvement in coding the severity of illness.
  • Formulates a report describing findings and focused action plan for the physician/clinician/staff member.
  • Developing provider trainings and tools on risk adjustment education, auditing, and other topics as assigned.
  • Working with leadership on IT solutions for appropriate risk capture and audits.
  • Reviews focused action plan with the physician/clinician and office staff and validates their understanding.
  • Develops reports of findings and action plan.
  • Is available for follow up questions and educational activities for the staff/clinicians.

Experience Requirements and Preferences:

  • RN Degree
  • Nursing experience in managed care organization or acute care hospital preferred. 2-3 years of outpatient physician office coding experience preferred.
  • CPC Credential-Required;
  • Valid/Current CPC Certification, through APPC-preferred;
  • RHIA/RHIT Credentials-Preferred;
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, federal regulations and policies pertaining to documentation and billing. 
  • Excellent computer skills required.
  • Past experience working with excel preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCC) preferred.
  • Experience in EPIC preferred, but not required
